I don't quite understand. Are you saying that you simply discovered a new type of weapon, and that this weapon type is somehow special in that it is "locked" until you find one (which doesn't make any sense).
Or that you have unlocked it for everyone (which doesn't seem to make any sense)?
Or have you found a pommel blade that, when identified, unlocked certain upgrades for your character?

If I understand correctly when you get a "rare" item (not the purple ones) then it will say you have unlocked a new type of category that that item was under. It will then drop off of normal and boss mobs.
It said "you have unlocked the item pummel blade" and some screen popped up and showed a picture of the blade (looked like my version) and then dissapeared.

Uh? I was sure that the "Unlock" thing is only for giving access to your PVP Character O_o

Indeed. Unlocking an item only means that it is available as a customization option for your PvP characters.

Can you show us a screenshot of the item? I don't recall ever seeing an item with that name. As far as I know you unlock weapon upgrades (sword pommels, sword hilt, bow string, bow grip, etc), not actual weapons themselves.

just to help everyone out with these "unlock" messages :
EVERY time you see one, including skills/items/runes etc., it means that your account has unlocked this item (duh? pointless sentence award!). When you create a PvP char, a lot of stuff is going to be locked and unavailable, including skills remember! by unlocking in PvE, you get to use more stuff when creating PvP chars! get exploring guys and get your stuff!

Do these unlocked items/skills remain on your account even if you delete the character who acquired them?

Yes, the unlocked items are tied to your account, and not to the character. So you can use them with any of the characters on your account, whether or not the "discovering" character has or has not been deleted.
